Upgrade with a verified backup

Run one command on your Docker host. The updater finds your installation, backs up your data, and upgrades the server and browser together.

Already installed?

Your settings and inventory come with you

The updater keeps your Docker volumes, printer keys, and browser address. It asks you to confirm the installation before making changes. During the upgrade, VoltVault is briefly unavailable.

Works with the official installer and older official full-stack Docker Compose deployments.

Run the upgrade

Keep Docker running. Open Terminal on the computer hosting VoltVault, then copy this command:

macOS and Linux
curl -fsSL https://voltvaultapp.com/upgrade.sh -o upgrade-voltvault.sh && bash upgrade-voltvault.sh
Read the Bash command · Read the upgrade engine

Check the installation folder and browser address it shows, then enter y. Your current version keeps running while the updater downloads and verifies the release images. The updater takes it offline for backup and checks, then prints your browser address when it is ready.

Choose an installation folder

If you have more than one installation, or automatic detection cannot choose one, point to the existing Compose directory:

bash upgrade-voltvault.sh --dir "$HOME/voltvault"

For an older full-stack deployment, use the folder containing compose.full-stack.yaml, usually voltvault-server.

For Windows, follow the manual upgrade guide.

What you need

  • Docker running with a current Compose plugin.
  • Python 3.9 or newer on the host. On Debian, Ubuntu, or Raspberry Pi OS, use sudo apt-get install -y python3. On Mac, get it from python.org.
  • Internet access for the release bundle and matching image downloads.
  • Free host storage for both source files and a complete copy of the data and upload volumes. Larger installations take longer to back up.

Server-only Docker, native Linux services, bind-mounted data, and customized Compose layouts use the manual upgrade guide. The updater explains unsupported layouts before changing them.

Backups and recovery

The updater copies your database, uploads, configuration, and previous image references into a protected, dated folder inside .voltvault-updater in your installation folder. It checks the copied files and database before upgrading. The completion message prints the backup location. Keep a protected off-machine copy.

If the new version fails its checks while browser access is closed, the updater restores your previous data and containers automatically. If restoration needs attention, it leaves the services stopped and prints recovery instructions.

The command was interrupted

Rerun the same downloaded command with the recovery option. Check the location and recovery phase before confirming:

bash upgrade-voltvault.sh --recover

Add --dir PATH if you have multiple installations. Recovery returns to the previous version while access is closed; run the normal upgrade command again afterward. If access may already have reopened, recovery retries the browser connection with the current data instead.

If browser access may already have reopened, the updater preserves your current data and asks you to troubleshoot the connection. It will not restore an older database over possible new inventory changes.
